Sherman Island

Sherman Island is a popular kitesurfing destination located in the Sacramento River Delta in California. It's known for its consistent and reliable winds, particularly from April to September, which makes it a popular spot for both beginners and experienced riders.

April - September Flatwater - Little waves

Crissy Field

Crissy Field is located in the Presidio of San Francisco and is a popular spot for kitesurfing due to its strong, consistent winds and stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The area offers a variety of kitesurfing conditions, from choppy water to waves.

Waddell Creek

Waddell Creek is a powerful wave spot located in the Santa Cruz area of California. Expect real ocean conditions with significant chop and surf that can get quite big, plus currents and rocks in the surf zone -- a spot for experienced wave riders, not a flatwater freestyle session.

Wind Conditions

California's kitesurfing wind is a thermal effect, not a coastal sea breeze — and its engine is inland, not the ocean.

California wind patterns

As the Central Valley heats up through the day, the hot inland air rises and pulls cooler marine air in from the coast to replace it, building steadily through the afternoon and typically peaking in the late afternoon or early evening. At Sherman Island in the Sacramento River Delta, the best directions are SW, WSW and W. The same inland-heating mechanism drives the Bay Area's city-front spots (Crissy Field, Ocean Beach, Waddell Creek), which is why they share a similar afternoon build pattern despite being spread across San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Wind further round toward due north is still onshore and rideable at Sherman Island, just gustier than the SW-W core, since it crosses land before reaching the spot rather than coming straight off the water.

Wind range

Real qualifying-hour gust data across California's five spots clusters mostly in the 12–27 knot range, and varies more by spot than by month. Sherman Island in the Delta typically runs 15–25 knots; Waddell Creek and Ocean Beach, the Bay Area's more exposed coastal spots, read gustier, regularly into the low-to-mid 20s; Crissy Field and Belmont Shore sit in between.

Best months for kitesurfing

April through September is unanimous across all five spots in this guide -- the one fully agreed-on stretch of the year, and every month in it rates Excellent. March holds up well too (4 of 5 spots) and October is a real but softer option (3 of 5). November is thin -- Waddell Creek is the only spot still good that month -- and December-January are the true off-season everywhere.

Regional wind differences

Real qualifying-hour data reframes a piece of California's usual pitch: Sherman Island in the Delta, typically 15–25 knots, isn't actually the region's strongest spot -- Waddell Creek and Ocean Beach, the Bay Area's more exposed coastal spots, read gustier, regularly into the low-to-mid 20s, and Waddell Creek also holds the region's longest season, good from February all the way through November. Crissy Field sits in between the two. Southern California's single spot in this guide, Belmont Shore, sees a sharper, narrower peak -- March through September is meaningfully stronger there than the shoulder months, so a Southern California trip is worth timing more tightly around that window than a Bay Area one. Waddell Creek and Ocean Beach both run a noticeably longer shoulder season than the Delta -- reliable station data shows both holding good wind from February through into October or November, well past the June/July peak, so a shoulder-month trip up the coast is a safer bet than one timed for the Delta's tighter April-September window.

  • Best time to kitesurf: April–September, unanimous across all five spots
  • Typical wind: 12–27 knots depending on spot and month; Sherman Island runs 15–25 knots, Waddell Creek and Ocean Beach read gustier, into the low-to-mid 20s.

  • Most reliable period: April–September
  • Wind character: Thermal, inland-driven, building through the afternoon
