What to expect at kitespot Punta Maroma?

Kitespot Punta Maroma is temporarly closed, because of an hotel build

In Mexico, a 25 min drive north of Playa del Carmen, you´ll find this paradisiac kitespot exactly at the tip of Maroma´s bay. Better known as Punta Maroma. You´ll drive inside a bit of jungle on a small dirt road, where you will most probably see some badger families, iguanas and exotic birds if you don't rush to kite.

Maroma´s bay was considered the most beautiful beach in the world a few years ago. It's radiant blue turquoise water, soft white sand and three hotels established there make´s it a pretty good kiting spot option for those searching to lodge in a nice hotel with their partner or family, for then walking out few meters to meet the kitespot and get a nice caribbean session with the kitemex crew and local riders mainly from Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos.

Since kitespot Punta Maroma is a private kitespot and the owners want to keep it low profile to avoid crowdedness, expect a rustic little cabin with no signs where the Kitemex school is based, surrounded by a pretty laid back vibe by the owners and the local riders.

Punta Maroma is a beautiful Caribbean bay where the colours of the sea will mesmerize your eyes specially with south east winds where the sea arranges at its best.

Wind

The same wind patterns as all the Riviera Maya kitespots. Trade winds start in November and finish in May.

The best winds for these spots are side onshore winds, meaning North West and South West winds. East winds will blow nicely too, but on shore.

Kitespot Punta Maroma’s wind range will go from 10 to 25 knots on average. It is a great spot for foilers too.

Water conditions

Blue turquoise, warm caribbean waters, very transparent with south east winds. The spot presents a small sand bank close to the shore that gives shallowness and also little kickers and flats in between to practice your strapless skills or boost up some jumps. Afterwards it goes deep but no more than 3 meters all the way to the reef. Out of the reef it will become deeper water.

Launch Area

Enough launching and landing area at the spot.

Lessons & Gear

Kite Mex will provide you with all the gear you need to have a sweet kiting, foiling or paddle boarding session.

Level of riding

Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.

Warnings

Don´t go inside the buoye´s zone. That's the designated area for beach users of the hotels. The reef in front is pretty shallow, some corals actually pop out of the water. Avoid riding there.

Facilities

Nice hotels around for lodging and the kite school. Besides that you have Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos to hang around, do groceries, bank, etc, only 25 min away.

How to get there?

From Cancun´s airport drive south only 45 minutes and go into Punta Maroma exit. From Puerto Morelos drive 25 min south. From Playa del Carmen, drive 25 min north.
