What to expect at kitespot El Cuyo?

In Mexico, a 2.5 hour drive from Cancun´s airport, you’ll find kitespot El Cuyo. It is located in a little traditional fisherman town of Yucatan, where you´ll be able to walk on sandy roads even barefoot if you like. It is small yet, there are no big hotels constructed and there is no plan for that since it is guarded by Rio Lagartos Natural Reserve.

Other things which are waiting for you are thermal winds, side on shore from March through June boosting in average 20 knots. Also a very calm and peaceful kiter vibe. There´s already around 8 kite schools in the town. Traditional little restaurants and also you can get fresh fish directly at the pier with the fisherman. Lots of accommodation options. It is surrounded by the Natural Reserve of Rio Lagartos, so lots of nature scenery to walk and explore.

Wind

In winter the trade winds blow North (on shore) and North East (side on shore) from 12 to 20 knots, maybe once or twice a week only. From April through June the thermal winds start kicking in with a side on shore 18-20 knots average 4 days a week at least.

Water conditions

Open sea side, small shore break with sand bar creating little (waste height) playful waves as kickers and for entertaining enough surf boards riders. These sand break will be complicated for beginners.

Launch Area

Quite large and wide beach.

Lessons & Gear

There is a variety of schools at the beach for example Pranik Kite Club & El Cuyo Kiteschool.

Level of riding

Intermediate & Advance.

Facilities

The village has pretty much everything you need, but is recommended to stack up groceries in Cancun or Tizimin, since the little stores have limited food variety and wine.
