Kitesurfing in Biscarrosse, France

Located on the southern section of the Biscarrosse lake system in the Landes region. Unlike the Atlantic ocean just a short drive away, this lake delivers a completely different experience: flat water, shallow areas, and much more forgiving conditions. It’s one of the most popular learning and freeride locations in southwest France.

What to Expect?

Expect a calm, spacious inland water playground surrounded by pine forests and sandy beaches. The atmosphere is relaxed, with a strong local watersports culture and plenty of space for rigging and launching.

The spot is ideal for long freeride sessions, progression training, and freestyle practice. On busy summer days it can get crowded, especially with windsurfers, wing foilers, and swimmers in designated zones, but there is usually enough room to share the water comfortably.

The vibe is much more beginner-friendly compared to the ocean, making it a natural stepping stone for riders progressing toward wave riding at Biscarrosse-Plage.

Wind

The lake works best with thermal and synoptic wind combinations typical of the Landes region, ranging from 15-20 knots.

The most common wind directions are:

  • North-West (NW)
  • West (W)
  • North (N)

On sunny days, a thermal effect often builds from late morning into the afternoon. As the land heats up faster than the water, the breeze tends to strengthen and stabilize, creating reliable riding conditions.

NW winds are especially clean on the lake, giving smooth, consistent wind with very few gusts. W winds can be slightly more variable depending on surrounding terrain, while N winds are generally solid but sometimes lighter near shore obstacles.

Because the lake is partially sheltered by forest, wind can feel slightly lighter near the beach and stronger further out.

Kitesizes

Kite sizes at the lake are generally larger than on the ocean due to lighter average wind strength.

For a rider around 75–85 kg:

  • 12m to 14m: Most common sizes for typical days
  • 9m to 11m: Strong thermal afternoons or windy fronts
  • 15m to 17m: Light wind summer mornings

A practical two-kite setup for the lake is often 12m + 15m. Many riders also bring a larger board (door-style or foil board) to maximize light wind sessions.

Kiteseason

The prime kitesurfing season in Biscarrosse runs from May through August. During this period, the winds are at their most consistent, providing optimal conditions for kitesurfing.

Water Conditions

The lake is known for its exceptionally flat water.

Typical conditions include:

  • Mirror-flat sections near shore in lighter winds
  • Light chop further out when wind increases
  • Shallow sandy bottom in many areas
    • shallow up to about 250 meters from shore, with depths remaining under 1.5 meters.
  • Very little wave formation

This makes it one of the best freestyle and learning environments in the region. The absence of ocean swell allows riders to focus purely on kite control, board handling, and tricks without wave interference.

Water depth varies, but many areas remain shallow for a long distance from shore, which adds a layer of safety for beginners.

Launch Area

The main launch area is a sandy beach with wide open space for rigging. Setup is generally easy, with plenty of room even during busy periods, although summer afternoons can become crowded.

The beach is usually divided informally between swimmers and riders, so it’s important to launch only in designated kitesurf areas and avoid swimming zones.

Wind direction plays a big role in launch quality. NW winds are typically the cleanest and safest for launching, while more onshore or gusty conditions require extra attention during setup and takeoff.

Lessons & Gear

This lake is one of the main learning hubs in southwest France. Several kite schools operate here throughout the season, offering structured beginner and progression courses.

Typical services include:

  • Beginner kitesurf lessons
  • Waterstart training
  • Upwind riding coaching
  • Freestyle progression sessions
  • Equipment rental and storage

The shallow water and predictable wind make it one of the safest environments in the region to learn kitesurfing. Rescue boats are often available during lessons, adding an extra layer of security for students.

Hazards

While the lake is much safer than the ocean, it still has some risks to be aware of:

  • Crowded water during peak summer afternoons
  • Shallow sandbanks that can affect board control
  • Wind shadows near the shoreline and trees
  • Occasional gusty conditions depending on wind direction
  • Mixing with swimmers and other water users in shared zones

One important consideration is navigation etiquette: staying within the kitesurfing area and respecting marked swimming sections is essential, especially in summer.

Level of Riding

  • Beginner: Excellent for beginners. The flat water, shallow depth, and steady wind make it one of the best learning environments in France.
  • Intermediate: Perfect for progression. Riders can easily practice upwind riding, transitions, jumps, and first freestyle tricks in safe conditions.
  • Advanced: Advanced riders may find it less challenging than ocean spots, but it is still ideal for freestyle training, testing new tricks, and light wind practice sessions.

Overall, this is primarily a beginner-to-intermediate spot, with advanced riders using it as a training ground.
