What to expect at kitespot Vargas?

At Gran Canaria, one of the Canary Islands, you’ll find kitespot Vargas after a 15 minutes drive from Gran Canaria airport. It is a wild beach covered with a half a meter layer of medium stones. Also there are very funny waves. The conditions are perfect for big air.

The best thing about the spot are the friendly locals.

Thermal Wind

The thermal wind at kitespot Vargas is Northern or NE (locals call it Alisios). In fact, it is an isobaric wind that blows even stronger when it’s hot. The windiest months are July and August. However, at kitespot Vargas it is windy more than 300 days per year.

In summer there will be +25 knots (up to 45 knots!), so you’ll need a 5-8m kite (75kg). During the rest of the year it doesn’t tend to blow that strong. In that case, bring an 8-10m kite (75kg).

Water conditions

At kitespot Vargas it is choppy and there are medium waves 50m away from the shore.

The water is pristine and cold. A 3/2 wetsuit is recommended throughout the year.

Launch Area

At kitespot Vargas the launching area is very limited. You will be on slippery medium stones launching your kite close to the parking. There is no room for failure.

Wrap your lines when you aren’t using your kite.

You should be an intermediate to advanced kiter to give a try to kitespot Vargas.

Warnings

Wear a helmet! If you crash near the shore, there are stones. You may break your kite and hurt yourself.

The launching process is tricky because the stones are slippery and the wind is really strong normally. It is better to ask an extra person wearing shoes to hold you by the harness.

There is no rescue service.

Facilities

There is a limited parking area next to the kitespot.

There is a camping place 500m away from the spot, where you can stay or buy beverages.

It is a wild beach so please, keep it clean!
