Wind Conditions

Charleston's two spots share the same southerly wind direction and the same core season, but they don't line up exactly -- Folly Beach leans more on a thermal top-up and holds its season a month longer on each end than Sullivan's Island does.

South Carolina wind patterns

Southerly wind (from roughly E/ENE through WSW) is the dominant pattern at both Charleston-area spots, forming as the barrier-island coast heats up and pulls air in off the Atlantic. April through July is where Sullivan's Island and Folly Beach agree -- good wind at both. Sullivan's Island gets there mostly on the prevailing pattern alone, with only June and July needing a secondary thermal boost to stay reliable. Folly Beach depends on that thermal top-up more -- every month of its season except April needs it -- but that same thermal effect is also what stretches its window a month earlier, into March, and a month later, through August, past where Sullivan's Island has already gone quiet.

Wind range

Real qualifying-hour gust data at both spots runs roughly 13–25 knots through their respective seasons.

Best months for kitesurfing

April through July, when both Sullivan's Island and Folly Beach read good -- the one stretch every Charleston-area spot in this guide agrees on. Folly Beach extends its own season further on both ends, March and August, on the strength of its thermal top-up; Sullivan's Island doesn't hold up in either of those two months.
