Hood River

Hood River, located in Oregon, USA, is renowned worldwide as one of the top kitesurfing destinations, offering consistent winds, stunning scenery, and a vibrant community of kiteboarders.

Floras Lake

Floras Lake is a freshwater lake on Oregon's southern coast near Bandon, separated from the Pacific by a narrow sandy dune -- launch from the beach on the sandy mole for flat, protected water on the lake, with small ocean waves just steps away on the other side of the dune.

Wind Conditions

Oregon's two kitespots run on two genuinely different wind mechanisms, not one shared pattern. Hood River's wind is a thermal effect driven by the Columbia River Gorge itself; Floras Lake, on the southern coast, rides a prevailing weather-system wind with no thermal component and no bad direction.

Oregon wind patterns

As the desert east of the Gorge heats up during the day, it pulls cooler marine air west to east through the narrow Gorge channel, accelerating as it squeezes between the canyon walls -- this is why Hood River blows predominantly from the west, with WSW, W and WNW the best directions. The thermal is reliable enough to carry May, June and August on its own; July is strong enough on the prevailing pattern alone that it doesn't need the thermal boost at all, which is why it's the single most dependable month at Hood River. September through April, the coast-to-desert temperature swing is too small or inconsistent to fire the thermal reliably. Floras Lake, on the southern Oregon coast, works completely differently -- it can be ridden in wind from virtually any direction thanks to safe launch options on more than one side of the spot, and its wind comes mainly from prevailing weather systems rather than local heating. That gives it a longer season than Hood River on both ends, March through October.

Wind range

Hood River typically runs 15–30 knots during its May–August season. Floras Lake, on real qualifying-hour gust data, runs a bit gustier still through its own season -- roughly 18–29 knots, March through October -- a genuine, prevailing-wind breeze rather than a Gorge-style thermal blast, but not a gentle one either.

Best months for kitesurfing

Hood River: May through August, with July the single most dependable month since the wind there is strong enough on the prevailing pattern alone, without needing the daily thermal to kick in. Floras Lake: March through October, a substantially longer window carried by prevailing coastal wind rather than a thermal effect -- it holds up in the shoulder months (March, April, September, October) where Hood River's Gorge thermal has already gone quiet.

Regional wind differences

Hood River and Floras Lake couldn't be more different mechanically, despite both sitting on the Oregon coast. Hood River's wind is squeezed and accelerated through the Columbia River Gorge by the daily heating of the high desert to its east -- a real thermal effect with a genuine off-season (September through April) once that temperature swing shrinks. Floras Lake, more than 250 miles south on the open coast, has no such thermal engine -- its wind comes from prevailing weather systems and can arrive from virtually any direction, which is exactly why its season runs longer on both ends, March through October, well past where Hood River's Gorge thermal has already quieted down.

  • Best time to kitesurf: May-August for a match at both spots; Floras Lake extends the window to March-October on its own
  • Typical wind: 15–30 knots at Hood River during its season; Floras Lake runs a bit gustier still, roughly 18-29 knots
  • Best wind direction: W, WSW, WNW at Hood River (Gorge-channeled); virtually any direction at Floras Lake
  • Most reliable period: May-August
  • Wind character: Thermal and Gorge-driven at Hood River; a non-thermal, prevailing coastal wind at Floras Lake

Oregon FAQ

May through August, when the Columbia River Gorge's thermal is most reliable at Hood River. Floras Lake, on the southern Oregon coast, runs on a separate, non-thermal prevailing wind and holds a real season from March through October -- longer than Hood River on either end.

Hood River is rated beginner-friendly on our spot guide, though the Gorge's swell makes it more rewarding once you're comfortable riding chop.
