Kitesurfing at Meia Praia, Portugal
Meia Praia, located in the beautiful Baia de Lagos, is a fantastic kitesurfing spot that offers a variety of conditions suitable for different levels of riders. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced kitesurfer, Meia Praia has something to offer. In this guide, we'll explore everything you need to know about kitesurfing at Meia Praia.
What to Expect?
Meia Praia is known for its expansive sandy beach and diverse wind and water conditions. The spot is popular among locals and tourists alike, so expect a friendly and vibrant kitesurfing community.
Wind
The wind at Meia Praia ranging from 15-25 knots is predominantly from the north (Nortada), which can be gusty but provides good riding conditions. The spot works well with various wind directions, including North (N), Southwest (SW), Northwest (NW), and North-Northwest (NNW). While the main wind directions are N, NW, and NNW, the SW winds can also bring nice wave conditions for those looking to catch some surf. Since the main wind direction is offshore you can buy a rescue-ticket before hand at one of the schools.
In spring and summer, the wind often strengthens in the afternoon due to a thermal (sea-breeze) effect: as the land heats faster than the ocean, cooler marine air is drawn toward shore, reinforcing the prevailing Nortada. This combination frequently produces stronger and more reliable afternoon sessions.
Kitesizes
The appropriate kite size will depend on the wind strength on any given day. Generally, you can expect to use a kite size ranging from 7m to 12m. The most used kitesize is a 9m.
Kiteseason
The best time to kitesurf at Meia Praia is from March through October when the Nortada wind is most consistent. However, the spot is kitesurfable year-round, with varying conditions depending on the season.
Water Conditions
On the ocean side, the SW wind can create nice waves, providing exciting conditions for wave riders. Be cautious of the stronger shore break and current when the wind is onshore or side-onshore.
Launch Area
The beach at Meia Praia is wide and sandy, making it easy to set up and launch your kite. The ample space is perfect for avoiding obstacles and ensures a safe launch.
