Kitesurfing at Alvor Lagoon (Ria de Alvor), Portugal

Tucked between Lagos and Alvor in the Algarve, a 1 hour drive from Faro, Alvor Lagoon (Ria de Alvor), is one of southern Portugal’s most popular flat-water kitesurfing spots. With shallow sandbanks, reliable summer thermals, and a relaxed vibe, it attracts everyone from beginners to freestyle riders.

What to Expect?

Alvor Lagoon is a tidal lagoon system with wide shallow areas, sandbanks, and a narrow inlet connecting to the Atlantic Ocean.

  • At low tide: expect ultra-flat, shallow water—perfect for freestyle
  • At high tide: deeper water with more riding space
  • A friendly, social kite scene with several schools operating daily
  • Warm climate and consistent sunshine

It’s a versatile spot, but conditions can change quickly with wind and tides.

Wind

The dominant wind pattern is the Nortada, a thermal wind common in Portugal.

  • Direction: North to Northwest (side-shore to side-onshore)
  • Strength: Typically 15–25 knots in summer
  • Best time: Afternoon (14:00–18:00 peak)

Inside the lagoon:

  • Slightly lighter and gustier
  • Wind shadows near shore and sandbanks

Near the inlet:

  • Stronger and cleaner wind, but more current

Other conditions:

  • Easterly (offshore): gusty and unsafe
  • Southerly: less reliable inside lagoon

Kitesizes

Typical summer kite sizes depend on rider weight and position:

  • 70–80 kg riders: 9–12m
  • Lighter riders: 7–10m
  • Heavier riders: 10–14m

Adjustments:

  • Inside lagoon → often go one size bigger
  • Near inlet → often one size smaller

Kiteseason

The kiteseason at Alvor Lagoon starts around February and lasts until September.

  • Best months: May to September
  • Peak season: June, July, August

During summer:

  • Reliable thermal winds almost daily

Outside summer:

  • Less consistent wind
  • More dependent on weather systems

Water conditions

  • Inside lagoon:

    • Flat to slightly choppy
    • Shallow and forgiving
  • Low tide:

    • Extremely flat (“butter-flat”)
    • Less space in some areas
  • High tide:

    • More room
    • Slight chop
  • Ocean side:

    • Waves and stronger wind

Launch Area

  • Sandy and relatively easy in most areas
  • Can get crowded in peak season
  • Wind near shore may be gusty or shadowed

Beginners may need assistance for safe launching.

Alvor Lagoon Launch Area
  • Main Launch Area: Located at the Lagos side of the lagoon, at Praia da Rio de Alvor. When parked at Estr do Vale da Lama, walk 400m over a gravel road/dike which leads to a spacious shallow-water launch area with side-shore wind.
  • Alvor: A long sandy beach reached via a boardwalk offers the easiest and most versatile launch, with generally onshore wind, plenty of setup space, and access to both lagoon and ocean riding.
  • Rocha Delicada: A more compact launch spot on the North side with side-offshore wind, where available space depends heavily on the tide and nearby terrain can affect wind quality.
  • Fish Farm: This is a technical and less recommended launch with offshore, gusty wind and limited space, mainly used by kite schools accessing the lagoon by boat.

FAQs

From February to September is the best time.

Flat shallow water.

Yes, from mid-March to late October (especially May to September), the land heats up inland and pulls cooler air from the Atlantic, creating a consistent north to northwest wind. This thermal effect typically builds through the late morning and peaks in the afternoon, often delivering 15–25 knots. It’s the main reason the spot is so popular in summer.

Yes, in most cases you’ll want a wetsuit. Even in summer, the Atlantic water around Alvor stays relatively cool. 2mm shorty from June-September, 3:2 from March-May and October-November, 4/3 mm (sometimes thicker depending on cold fronts) from December-February.
