The Kingdom of the Netherlands also includes several Caribbean territories, often referred to as the Dutch Caribbean. The European part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Holland) consists of 12 provinces, with Amsterdam as the capital and The Hague serving as the seat of the government. The Caribbean territories include Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, each of which has a distinct status within the Kingdom.
In this guide, we will explore the wind conditions for kitesurfing in the European part and highlight some of the Netherlands best kitesurfing spots.
Wind Conditions in Netherlands
The success of any kitesurfing session relies heavily on the prevailing wind conditions, and the Netherlands doesn't disappoint when it comes to providing the perfect breeze. The Dutch coastline, which stretches over 450 kilometers, offers an array of spots catering to all skill levels. However, it's crucial to understand the wind patterns to make the most of your kitesurfing experience.
-
Wind Direction: The predominant wind direction in the Netherlands is from the southwest, thanks to the prevailing westerlies. This makes the western coast, including spots like Zandvoort and Scheveningen, particularly favorable for kitesurfing. The consistent winds from this direction create ideal conditions for both beginners and advanced riders.
-
Wind Speed: A moderate to strong wind speed is ideal for kitesurfing, and the Netherlands often experiences winds within this range. On average, wind speeds of 15-25 knots are common, providing the perfect balance between the exhilaration of speed and the control needed for tricks and maneuvers.
-
Seasonal Considerations: While kitesurfing is a year-round activity in the Netherlands, the wind conditions can vary with the seasons. Spring and summer tend to bring more stable and predictable winds, making them the prime seasons for kitesurfing. However, dedicated enthusiasts can still find opportunities during the fall and winter months, with slightly colder temperatures and potentially stronger winds.
-
Sea Breezes: Coastal areas, especially in the summer months, are often affected by sea breezes. During the day, as the land heats up more quickly than the sea, warm air over the land rises, creating a low-pressure area. Cooler air from the sea then rushes in to fill this void, resulting in a sea breeze. This can enhance the overall wind conditions for kitesurfers, particularly in the afternoons.
Best Wind Months
All below spots display the best months for kitesurfing at each spot, based on wind certainty. Green indicates a wind certainty of 60% or higher—equivalent to at least 4 kitesurfing days per week. Red indicates less than 60% certainty. For the Netherlands, this data is based on 10 years of onshore wind statistics.
