What to expect at Kitespot Longniddry?

Kitespot Longniddry is the closest spot to Edinburgh the Scottish Capital and therefore one of the most popular, a mere 25 minute drive from the city-centre (30 mins from the airport!!) and you will see the canopies above the trees as you approach. You park at Longniddry Bents and practically drive right to the beach 5m from the water at high tide.

Wind

Longniddry works in a windrange from WSW to N. Wind slightly beyond this range will still be onshore, but beware as it will be gusty and patchy. The windiest season is from October till April and is Predominantly West (40%) and gets an average daily wind of 14kts. Best sizes to take are 9m-12m (70/90kg).

Those proficient at foiling will be able to use this spot most days of the year.

Water conditions

The water temperature during the summer reaches a high of 14° and in the winter a low of 5°. Manageable with a good Neoprene gear, the relatively warm water throughout the summer allows for use of a 4/3 wetsuit from mid-June till mid-October.
Longniddry tends to have small chop, with larger kickers as the wind grows, during rising tides small lagoons for towards the West of the spot. As the tide rises the rideable area close to shore will get very small so due to the hidden rocks on either side at high tide. The spot work best from mid to low tide. It doesn’t get deep too fast and therefore is more suitable for students.

Launch area

Longniddry allows you to drive right up to the beach, which mostly disappears at high tide leading to a very small launch spot. At low tide however there is more than enough beach to launch and there is a fairly long walk to the waterline. Beware however of the fast moving tide. Keep a close eye on your gear if you leave it in a tidal zone. Best to pump up your kite on the grass near the parking spot and walk with your pumped kite to the waterline.

Level of riding

This spot is recommended for intermediate to advanced riders only as there are rocks on either side of the riding area. Also take care when riding above the rocks as dropping your kite here could be fatal to your kite. Beginners can ride here with appropriate instruction.

Lessons & Gear

Skymonster Kiteboarding offers lessons and gear rental.

Facilities

During the Summer months and on weekends there is a food truck in the parking place that offers great snacks and drinks. Further facilities can be found in Longniddry town. Overnight camping is permitted, ideal for those with campervans.

Warnings

Take care of the hidden rocks, so it is best to visit the spot for the first time at low tide to memorise the locations of the rocks. The tide on the beach is fast, so keep and eye on your gear. There is no spot specific rescue service however the RNLI does cover the area if an offshore accident does happen.
