Kitesurfing at La Punta (Lake Como, Italy)
Tucked away at the northern tip of Lake Como in Italy, La Punta is one of Europe’s most reliable inland kitesurfing destinations. With its thermal wind system, scenic alpine backdrop, and forgiving setup, it’s a favorite for both progression riders and freestyle lovers.
What to Expect?
La Punta offers a predictable thermal wind system, small grassy rigging areas, and relatively safe riding conditions compared to many lakes. The vibe is relaxed but active during peak summer, with kiters, windsurfers, and wingfoilers sharing the water.
Expect:
- Consistent afternoon sessions
- Beautiful mountain scenery
- Flat to lightly choppy water
- A mix of beginners and experienced riders
It’s not a wave spot—it’s all about freestyle, cruising, and progression.
Wind
The wind system at La Punta is dominated by thermals:
Breva (Main Wind)
- Direction: South (blows up the lake)
- Effect at La Punta: Side-onshore
- Timing: ~12:00 until ~16:00
- Strength: 12–22 knots (most common 14–18 knots)
This is the wind you come for. On sunny days, it’s remarkably consistent.
Tivano (Morning Wind)
- Direction: North
- Timing: Early morning (6:00–10:00)
- Quality: Often gusty and offshore → not ideal for kiting here
Storm Winds (North)
- Can bring 25–40 knots
- Gusty and unstable
- Only suitable for advanced riders
Key rule: No sun = no Breva.
Kitesizes
Typical kite sizes depend on the thermal strength:
- Average days (12–18 knots): 12–15m
- Stronger days (18–22 knots): 10–12m
Most riders bring:
- 10m + 12m combo (covers ~80% of sessions)
Heavier riders may prefer 11m + 14m.
Kiteseason
- Best season: May → September
- Peak reliability: June → August
- Shoulder months: April & October (less consistent)
During summer, the Breva thermal works almost daily when it’s sunny.
