What to Expect?

Gizzeria Lido is renowned for its consistent wind conditions and its welcoming local kitesurfing community. The spot isn't overly crowded, allowing for plenty of space to ride and indulge in the beautiful surroundings.

Wind

The wind in Gizzeria Lido is primarily from the Northwest and occassionally from the Southwest. Both are side-onshore most of the time. Expect thermal winds ranging between 11-17 knots, providing a steady and reliable breeze for most days from June through Mid-September. Occasionally, the wind can ramp up to about 25 knots, remaining constant and not gusty, which is perfect for kitesurfing.

From June through Mid-September the Northwest winds are mostly 4-6 knots more than forecasted.

Wind drivers

  • Thermal sea breeze: Most windy afternoons come from a thermal circulation between land and sea in the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia.

    Process:

    • Land in Calabria heats strongly in summer.
    • Air above land rises.
    • Cooler air from the sea flows inland.
    • This produces the afternoon onshore wind (usually W–NW).

    Typical timing:

    • starts 13:00–14:00
    • peaks 15:00–17:30
    • fades after 18:30
  • Coastal funneling (weak Venturi-like effect): The coastline and mountains slightly focus the airflow. Two geographic factors help strengthen the wind:

    • Gulf funneling: The curved coastline of the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia tends to channel the onshore wind toward the center of the gulf, where Gizzeria sits.
    • Mountain heating inland: The mountains inland, especially the Sila, heat strongly during the day and increase the pressure gradient, which pulls air more strongly from the sea.

This can add several knots to the thermal wind.

Best Forecast Models For Gizzeria Lido

  • ECMWF: underestimates thermals by ~4–6 kt.
  • ICON: has a higher resolution, detects the afternoon thermal buildup better than GFS.
  • WRF 3: very high resolution model. Often the most accurate within 48 hours.

If all three show 14–16 kt, it’s usually a 20+ kt kitesurf day.

Kitesizes

The wind ranges from 11 to 25 knots with occassional stronger wind days. So its best to bring a 10-12-14m quiver as 75kg rider. Many locals start the session on a bigger kite (12–14 m²) and switch down to 10 m² as the thermal peaks.

Kiteseason

The prime kitesurfing season in Gizzeria Lido typically spans from June through Mid-September. The thermal winds are most reliable during these months, ensuring plenty of rideable days. Outside of this period, while kitesurfing is still possible, wind conditions may vary more significantly.

Water Conditions

Expect choppy water conditions up to about 1 meter high. While the water isn’t perfectly flat, it offers enough challenge to keep things interesting without being too overwhelming. During prolonged periods of stronger wind, you might encounter a higher wind swell. Note that there is no shallow water; after about 2-3 meters, the water deepens significantly, so be prepared for deep water starts.

The launch area at Gizzeria Lido is spacious and beginner-friendly, with plenty of room to set up and launch your kite. The beach is wide, providing ample space for maneuvering and practicing, making it an ideal spot for kitesurfers of all levels.
