Kitesurfing in Dongo, Lake Como
Nestled on the northern part of Lake Como, Dongo is one of Italy’s most scenic and unique kitesurfing destinations. Surrounded by dramatic alpine mountains and powered by reliable thermal winds, it offers a very different experience compared to ocean spots. But don’t let the beauty fool you—this is a spot that rewards knowledge and preparation.
What to Expect?
Dongo is a thermal wind-driven lake spot with a relaxed, local vibe. There’s no mass tourism like at big coastal kite beaches—just a mix of experienced riders, schools, and nature.
Expect:
- Afternoon sessions rather than all-day riding
- Stunning alpine scenery
- A slightly technical setup compared to beginner beach spots
- A strong reliance on weather knowledge
It’s not a “show up and ride anytime” destination—you need to time it right.
Wind
The wind at Dongo is dominated by thermal systems, primarily the Breva.
Breva (main wind):
- Direction: South to southwest (side-onshore)
- Time: Builds from ~13:00, peaks mid-afternoon
- Strength: Typically 12–20 knots
- Driver: Sun heating the mountains → air rising → wind pulled up the lake
Tivano (morning wind):
- Direction: North
- Time: Early morning
- Strength: Usually light and unreliable for kiting
Key insight:
- Sunshine is essential
- Forecast apps often underestimate the wind
- Best sessions happen on hot, clear, stable days
Kitesizes
Typical kite sizes at Dongo depend on the thermal strength:
- 12m – 15m → most common (average Breva day)
- 10m – 12m → stronger summer afternoons
- 15m+ or foil gear → lighter days or early sessions
Because the wind builds during the day, many riders:
- Start with a bigger kite
- Switch down as the Breva strengthens
Kiteseason
The main kitesurf season runs from:
April → October
Best months:
- May – September → most consistent thermals
- June – August → strongest and most reliable winds
Spring and autumn can still work but are less predictable.
Water conditions
Lake Como offers very different water conditions compared to the ocean:
- Near shore: relatively flat, sometimes chop
- Further out: light to moderate chop
- No waves
The wind tends to be:
- Slightly gusty near launch
- Cleaner and stronger offshore
Flat water lovers will enjoy this spot—especially for freeride and freestyle.
Launch Area
The launch area in Dongo is limited and somewhat technical:
- Small beach / grass areas
- Possible wind shadow close to shore
- Often requires assistance or careful timing
Many riders use:
- Drift launches
- Boat launches (with schools or services)
👉 Not a classic wide sandy beach—be prepared.
There is also a launch area at Spiaggia di Dongo.
Lessons & Gear
There are several kite schools operating in the area that offer:
- Beginner and intermediate lessons
- Boat-supported sessions
- Lift/shuttle services
- Equipment rental
Boat support is especially valuable because:
- Wind is stronger offshore
- It adds a safety layer
- It simplifies launching and landing
If you’re new to lake kiting, taking a lesson here is highly recommended.

Hazards
Dongo is beautiful—but it comes with real risks:
- Offshore drift risk if wind drops
- Thermal shutdown (wind suddenly dying)
- Gusty conditions near shore
- Limited rescue options unless with a school
- Strong north winds (Ventone) can appear unexpectedly
Always:
- Know how to self-rescue
- Keep an eye on weather changes
- Avoid riding in unstable or stormy conditions
Level of Riding
Recommended level: Intermediate and above
Why:
- Technical launch
- Variable wind near shore
- Self-reliance required
Beginners can still ride here, but:
- Best with professional instruction
- Preferably with boat support
