Kitesurfing at Campione del Garda
Tucked between dramatic cliffs on the western shore of Lake Garda, Campione del Garda is one of Europe’s most unique and technical kitesurfing destinations. Known for its reliable thermal winds and intermediate launch area or boat-based access, it offers a very different experience compared to typical beach launches.
What to Expect?
Campione is not your typical kitespot. There is no wide sandy beach where you can freely launch your kite. Instead, some riders use a boat-based “lift service” to reach the wind zone offshore. Experienced intermediate riders are comfortable to launch from the narrow launch area, where there kite gets trown in the air, you walk back and are ready to walk into the water with your board and have some fun on the water.
You can expect:
- A well-organized and regulated kitespot
- Incredible alpine scenery with steep cliffs
- Reliable wind cycles driven by thermals
- A strong focus on safety and local rules
This is a spot where logistics and timing matter just as much as riding skill.
Wind
Campione is powered by two main thermal winds:
Peler (Morning – North Wind)
- Blows from the north
- Early morning (sunrise to around 10:00)
- Strong (15–30 knots), but often gusty
Ora (Afternoon – South Wind)
- Blows from the south
- Starts around midday and lasts into the evening
- More stable (12–22 knots), ideal for most riders
A typical day includes a calm transition period between these winds, so planning your session timing is essential.
Kitesizes
Kite size depends on the wind cycle:
Morning (Peler):
- 6m – 9m
- Stronger wind requires smaller kites
Afternoon (Ora):
- 9m – 15m
- Most common sizes: 10m – 13m
Foil riders:
- Often use 7m – 10m in lighter Ora conditions
Bringing a range of kite sizes is recommended to make the most of both wind windows.
Kiteseason
The main season runs from:
April to October
Best months:
- May – September offer the most consistent thermal winds, where June through August are best of best.
- Summer provides the highest reliability, especially for the Ora
Outside this period, wind becomes less predictable and temperatures drop.
Water conditions
- Mostly flat water to small chop
- Slight waves during stronger morning winds
- Freshwater lake (no tides, no salt)
Water temperature:
- Spring: Cool
- Summer: Warm and comfortable
- Autumn: Gradually cooling
A wetsuit is recommended for most of the season.
Launch Area
Campione is unique because:
- There is no traditional beach launch
- Some riders use a boat (“lift service”) to get on the water
- You are dropped directly into the wind zone offshore
On land:
- Limited rigging space
- Strict rules and organization
This system increases safety but requires planning and sometimes advance booking.
Lessons & Gear
There are several professional kite schools in Campione offering:
- Beginner to advanced lessons
- Boat-supported training
- Equipment rental
- Rescue and assistance
Most lessons include:
- Radio helmets
- On-water supervision
- Access to lift boats
If it’s your first time here, booking a lesson or lift package is highly recommended.
Kite schools:
- Kite Champion ASD operates the launch area and requires a membership
- Spread Wings

- Reunion Kite Academy
Hazards
Campione is not a simple or forgiving kitespot. Key hazards include:
- No easy self-rescue without boat support
- Gusty and strong morning winds
- Cliffs affecting wind patterns
- Wind drop during transitions
- Limited landing/launching options
Also:
- Strict riding zones must be respected
- Riding outside allowed areas is not permitted
Level of Riding
Recommended level: Intermediate to advanced
Beginners:
- Should only ride with a school or instructor
Why?
- Complex launch logistics
- Changing wind conditions
- Need for good upwind riding skills
Advanced riders will enjoy:
- Reliable wind
- Scenic conditions
- Great foiling opportunities
