Kitesurfing at Île de Ré, France
Rivedoux-Plage sits right at the gateway of Île de Ré, just across the bridge from La Rochelle. It’s one of the most iconic and accessible kitesurf spots on the island, offering a mix of flat-water cruising, chop, and reliable Atlantic wind conditions. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced rider chasing windy sessions, this spot has a bit of everything.
What to Expect?
Rivedoux-Plage is a wide, sandy beach exposed to the Atlantic channel between the island and the mainland. The kitesurfing area is spacious, especially on the northern side near the bridge, and offers plenty of room for launching and riding.
Expect a lively but relaxed vibe during peak season, with kiters, windsurfers, and beachgoers sharing the coastline. In the off-season, it becomes much quieter and more open, turning into a proper freeride playground.
Wind
The wind at Rivedoux-Plage is primarily driven by Atlantic weather systems, making it quite dynamic and sometimes gusty.
The most common wind directions are:
- West (W)
- Northwest (NW)
- Southwest (SW)
Northwest winds are the cleanest and most consistent for kitesurfing, often blowing side-onshore and creating ideal riding conditions. Westerly winds are frequent but can be a bit gustier due to the land influence and funnel effect from the bridge area.
In summer, thermal sea breezes ranging from 15-20 knots can also kick in during the afternoon, usually from the north or northwest, offering lighter but rideable conditions.
Kitesizes
Choosing the right kite size depends heavily on the season and wind strength.
Typical ranges:
- 12–15 knots: 12–14m kite
- 16–22 knots: 9–12m kite
- 23–30+ knots: 6–9m kite
In summer, expect more light-wind days where larger kites or foil setups are useful. During autumn and winter, Atlantic storm systems can bring strong winds that require smaller kites and solid experience.
Kiteseason
Rivedoux-Plage offers year-round kitesurfing. However the best winds are present from October through May and July.
Water conditions
Water conditions vary with wind direction and tide.
Typical conditions include:
- Moderate chop
- Shallow water near shore at lower tides
- Small wind-driven waves
- Flatter sections during certain tide states
The spot is primarily suited for freeride, cruising, boosting, and freestyle riding rather than dedicated wave riding.
