Kitesurfing at Praia das Gatas - Boa Vista
Far from Boa Vista’s main resorts lies Praia das Gatas, a wild and rarely-ridden kitesurfing area on the island’s northeast coast. Here, you'll find a shallow lagoon with mirror-flat water, framed by volcanic desert terrain and total solitude. It’s a true adventure spot for kiters who enjoy exploration over comfort.
What to Expect?
Praia das Gatas rewards riders willing to travel off-road. The 4×4 journey (about 50 minutes from Sal Rei) ends at a pristine coastline with shallow waters inside the lagoon and waves at the Atlantic outside it. There are no buildings, kite schools, or rescue services — only wind, ocean, and vast empty space.
Wind
The spot is powered by the northeast trade winds, blowing 15–25 knots from N to NE, giving cross-onshore conditions from the right. The wind is steady and dry, strongest between November and June.
Kitesizes
For an average 75 kg rider, 9–11 m² kites cover most days in peak season. Bring one large kite (12–13 m²) if you plan to stay into early winter or late season.
Kiteseason
Kiting works best November through June, mirroring Boa Vista’s main wind period.
Water Conditions
Inside the lagoon: flat to slightly rippled water, knee-deep and about 65m long and 10-12m wide.
In the bay: small wave sections form when the swell hits, offering short, glassy rides before reforming over deep water.
Because of shallow coral heads, check the tide before launching; mid to high tide is the safest window.
Launch Area
The launch zone is a wide sandy beach backed by lava rock.
Lessons & Gear
There are no kite schools or rentals based here. Advanced riders bring their own equipment or book guided day trips with 4×4 operators from Sal Rei who know the access track. If you want lessons or safety backup, start at Praia Carlota, then visit Gatas for a freeride day once confident.
Hazards
- Remote location — no phone coverage
- 4×4 access only — track is rough sand and volcanic soil
Level of Riding
Intermediate to advanced only. The isolation, coral terrain demand good control and safety awareness. Confident freestyle riders will love the glassy water and surreal setting — it feels like your own private lagoon.
How to Get There
From Sal Rei, drive east toward Fundo das Figueiras, then follow the 4×4 track north to Praia das Gatas. The route crosses desert plains and rocky paths, taking about 50–55 minutes. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and all gear — there are no facilities on site.
Praia das Gatas is not for everyone, but for those chasing untouched flatwater and wild scenery, it’s pure kitesurfing freedom — raw, quiet, and completely off the grid.
