North Skyway Bridge - Florida
intermediate  flatwater sand sea

What to expect at kitespot North Skyway Bridge?

In Florida, a 30 minute drive from Tampa international airport you’ll find kitespot North Skyway Bridge with flat to choppy water and a small beach at Tampa Bay.

This spot is known even to Florida non-kitesurfers. This is because there are often kitesurfers when most people are travelling from or to the office.

Thermal Wind

Around fall and spring, there is a good chance you’ll benefit from the afternoon thermal effect (sea breeze), because of the big difference in temparature above land and sea.

In winter the thermal effect is more likely to be there in the morning, because cold air is sucked into the Gulf of Mexico. Besides the thermal wind this spot meets some tropical storms now and then, with hurricane conditions.

From October to June the wind is around 13-17 knots. It's best to kitesurf when the wind is coming from the North East to the South East.

Water conditions

The water is shallow at the beginning and will stay shallow if you move towards the sandbank in front of the spot. At the right end of the sandbank and 50 ish meters at the right of it (160 ft) there are sharp oyster beds, so keep yourself away from oysters while kitesurfing. It's recommended to wear surf shoes because there could be sharp stones in the water.

Kitespot North Skyway Bridge is subjected to tide, however you're still able to kitesurf at low tide. If you enter the deep water spots remember that there is a strong current, big fishes and some passing boats.

Launch area

The sand is full of prickly sand spurs, so wear your surf shoes and be careful when setting up your gear. The launch area gets crowded very fast, so wind up your lines when your session is done.

Level of riding

This spot is only for intermediate riders because of the small beach, so you need to be able to ride upwind and do not lose altitude. Remember to not ride alone because there is no rescue at this spot. If you're under guidance of a kitesurf instructor you can also kitesurf when you're a beginner.
