What to expect at kitespot Maddalena Spiaggia?

In Sardinia, Italy, you’ll find kitespot Maddalena Spiaggia with its sandy beach. It is a chill flat water/choppy spot mainly used by local riders and 10 minutes from Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital. This spot works only in the afternoon with thermal wind from the South and Southeast. It is perfect for intermediate and advanced riders and for beginners who want to take lessons. The kite spot does not have any hazard. The only aspect that kiters must pay attention to are beach users who are many, both downwind and upwind.

Level of riding

Good for intermediate, advanced and beginners (during the summer, beginners can only ride in this spot if they take lessons). The kite area is located at a beach used by many beach users. It is mandatory that the riders can ride upwind in order to go in and out of the water and stay inside the kite launching area. After riding 200m away from the beach, the kiters can ride anywhere.

Launch area

About 100 meters long. There is a beach boy helping launching and landing the kite during the busy season (July and August).

Crowd level

The spot is normally not very crowded except on weekends and at the end of July and August. However, there is plenty of space upwind of the launching area.

Lessons and Gear

Get your lessons at Kite Zone Sardegna. The gear used is Duotone and it is rented only to independent riders.

Water conditions

Flatwater, a bit Choppy, especially when the wind gets strong. Rarely wavy. The bottom is sandy. No booties are needed. The water gets deep quickly so it’s mandatory to know how to body drag and recover the board.

Best kitesurf wind

South, South East. The spot works mainly in summer with thermal wind. From May to September (depending on the years the thermal wind starts and ends a bit earlier or later. The most reliable thermal wind is between June and beginning of September with about 85% of windy days.) The thermal wind is normally between 15 and 18 knots. The wind starts from 13:30 until 16:30 most of the days, sometimes it lasts until the evening.

Facilities

Parking spots are free on the side of the street. Pay attention to the street signs because in some areas parking is not allowed. The local Kite School offers, to members only, showers, a small bar selling beverages and ice cream and a chilling area. Tourists can purchase weekly passes.
